Prato, 3 October 2014 – In Italy, one in 300 pregnancies ends with the death of the child at the end of pregnancy or after birth. Since 1983 all over the world, to raise awareness of public opinion and health professionals on this problem and on the resources available, it is celebrated in October is the month of awareness of infant death and pregnancy loss , in order to develop a culture on this issue, and to provide support for affected parents. Since 2007, Italy has also joined this important project thanks to the commitment of the CiaoLapo Onlus association.
Says Claudia Ravaldi, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, founder and president of CiaoLapo Onlus “Despite advances in prenatal medicine, this rate has remained virtually unchanged over the past decade. In Italy, around 2,500 families annually lose their baby in the last trimester of pregnancy or in the first days of life , often without an apparent cause. International studies tell us that a careful examination of each individual case could identify the causes in 70% of cases, and this could be useful in preventing further deaths in subsequent pregnancies.”
October awareness month
October is the month in which the associations that offer support to parents affected by this bereavement meet and share their experiences by promoting a series of coordinated activities around the world.
“CiaoLapo Onlus has been dealing with perinatal health since 2006, – continues Dr. Ravaldi –working for prevention and offering support to families affected by the loss of a child during pregnancy or after birth. Since 2007 we have been part of the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA), an international group of parents, scientific associations and researchers, which brings together the main international organizations involved in SIDS and intrauterine death. With the collaboration of ISA, we have inaugurated the website in Italian and Englishwww.babyloss.info which collects a lot of information on the month of awareness, also presenting all the initiatives organized in Italy for the month of October. “
In October CiaoLapo will also organize its usual National Gathering. In fact, on Sunday 12 October , parents and operators from all over Italy will gather at the Giardino degli Angeli in via Remo Tosi in Castel San Pietro Terme (BO), all day starting at 10.
The meeting will be preceded by two days of scientific papers entitled “To communicate. Facilitating the conversation with bereaved parents: group dynamics”, Organized under the patronage of the Municipality, on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 which will be held in the halls of the Palazzo Comunale in Piazza XX Settembre in Castel San Pietro Terme. The course will be held by Dr. Claudia Ravaldi, assisted by Dr. Cristina Fiore, 2nd level counselor, trainer Gordon and by Dr. Cecilia Ginanni, psychologist psychotherapist, facilitators of the self-help groups of CiaoLapo Onlus in Genoa and Prato. . The wave of light around the world
On October 15, the world day of commemoration will then be celebrated, at the end of which the Wave of Light will be created in various Italian cities with other associations from all over the world. It is the day when the world places increasing attention on this serious event that still afflicts a surprisingly high number of families (globally around three million a year).
Claudia Ravaldi explains: “To raise public awareness, parents will create aWave of Light around the world ; it is a creative concept born from an idea of the English associations: if all over the world every participant He lights a candle at 19 local time and keeps it lit for an hour , for the whole day of October 15th a wave of light will cross the globe, progressively illuminating the whole planet, one time zone after another. It is a symbolic way to feel ideally united with many other people in the world, united by a mourning that instead usually isolates: the death of a child.”
This year, participation was particularly high with the participation of parents and operators from around 40 Italian cities, coordinated by the CiaoLapo Onlus association. The day will end with two key socio-cultural events: the contemporary screening of the documentary in many cities’Lamoreverticale ‘by Teresa Paoli which will be followed by debates on the subject of perinatal health and the concert by Marco Ligabue in Prato (15 October at 9.30 pm, Prato City via Valentini 7) with fundraising in support of the ‘First Steps Project’ of CiaoLapo Onlus and the ‘Adolescent Project’ of the Nicco Fans Club Onlus.
